Emergency Medical Services Reorganized
The Bellmawr Emergency Medical Services has been back under the Borough since September 1st of 2009. Prior to September the ambulance was being ran by an association which handled the day to day operations, the Borough provided the Ambulances and insured them the association handled the staffing along with the building cost. With a decline in volunteer membership and the increased call volume the association was having a hard time keeping up.
Under the Direction of Mayor and Council the Borough Emergency Management Director, Jim Burleigh, who also serves as the Volunteer District Fire Chief, reorganized and formed a Division of Emergency Medical Services as a branch of the Fire Department. This follows a national trend to consolidate Fire and EMS services in order to provide a more efficient service while being able to keep cost down. Today the EMS service is staffed 24/7 with two EMTs and an EMS supervisor. The supervisor handles the day to day operations setting policy and procedures.
During the first six months of call volume has increased 10% and the response time, from dispatch time to patient contact has decreased by 10%. They are also credited with three CPR saves. During last month’s Mayor and Council’s caucus meeting (August 2010) officials learned that the total cost of providing the EMS service has been covered by insurance billing, resulting in little to no impact to the taxpayers. Having the EMS become a branch of the Fire Department has also opened up additional grant funding opportunities for the Borough. Since 2003 the Fire Department has secured over $300.000.00 in grants, reducing the burden on the taxpayer.
Please keep in mind the Bellmawr Fire Department is still 100% VOLUNTEER and is the busiest all volunteer department in Camden County.
